“TIME TO ACT” ~Response to the climate and energy crises~

There are concerns that the ongoing climate crisis and the impact of the energy crisis will be prolonged, which is having a significant impact on life and business in Tokyo.

As an area of major energy consumption, Tokyo will accelerate efforts to establish a foundation for a decarbonized society and ensure energy security in an integrated manner in order to realize carbon half by 2030.

Questions about solar power installation

Who is responsible for installing solar power generations?

Major housing suppliers that supply over 20,000 ㎡ of housing on a yearly basis (approx. 50 companies) will be subject to this mandate.
New buildings are subject; existing buildings are exempt.
✔ This is a system in which housing suppliers and homeowners/buyers work together to improve the environmental performance of buildings.

What are the benefits?

Can reduce utility bills
✔ Savings of about 7,800 yen/month, 93,600 yen/year
⇒The system installation cost of about 980,000 yen can be recouped in about 6 years under the currently available grant of 100,000 yen /kW.

Reduce carbon emissions

✔ The amount of CO2 reduced through generating 4kW of solar power is equivalent to the amount of CO2 absorbed by a 2,000m2 cedar forest (about 200 trees).

Electricity can be used during power outages

✔ Even during power outages you can collect information and check the safety of others using your TV, smartphone or other devices.
✔ Disaster preparedness can be enhanced by adding a storage battery.

How will things change once the mandate is implemented?

✔ Businesses will continue to develop products and services that take full advantage of the benefits of solar power generation.
✔ Houses equipped with solar power generation equipment will become standard and the options for Tokyo residents will increase.

Which houses will be subject?

✔ Each housing supplier will be required to comply with the “Renewable Energy Installation Standards” and install solar power generation on a percentage of their supplied houses. Conditions such as sun exposure, house and roof shape will be taken into consideration.
✔ A flexible calculation method determines the renewable energy installation rate for each housing supplier and allows them to flexibly meet requirements.

When does this new system take effect?

✔ The mandate will go into effect in April 2025,after a two-year preparation and public notification period.
