History of Toshima Island

Toshima Island

About 4000 years ago, people built the dwellings in Toshima Island. Earthenware, which was made in the Jomon and Yayoi period, was excavated from here. These places seem similar to those in the western part of the Kanto and Chubu region. There is also a story about these people coming to Toshima island via the Izu Peninsula. The story says they came to Toshima Island approximately 6000 years ago and tried to use Toshima Island as a rest stop on the journey to get obsidian on Kozushima Island.
