Features of Miyakejima Island
A Magnificent Volcanic Island
Miyakejima Island is located approximately 180 kilometers (112 miles) south of Tokyo and 57 kilometers (35 miles) south of Izu Oshima. The average annual temperature is 17.7°C (63.9°F), but it also rises above 30°C (86°F) and falls below 0°C (32°F) for a few days each year. The island is warm throughout the year, making it a comfortable place to live. There is an active volcano within the Fuji volcanic zone. The volcano continues to erupt at roughly 20-year intervals. Eruptions occurred in the Tsubota area in 1962 and in the Ako area in 1983. The most recent eruption was at the summit of Mt. Oyama in 2000. On Miyakejima Island, you can see the magnificent scenery of a volcanic island, just like a natural volcano museum. Here, the Earth truly feels alive.
