Takao Visitor Center

The Takao Visitor Center is located on the summit of Mt. Takao, which has an elevation of 599 meters (1,965 feet). The visitor center provides information about the nature and history of the surrounding area to hikers, groups on field trips, and other visitors.

    • Mondays (xcept for weeks in which Monday is a national holiday, in which case the visitor center will be open on Monday and closed on Tuesday)

  • Access:
    • From JR Takao Station: Take the Keio Line to Takao-yamaguchi Station, and then walk five minutes to Kiyotaki Station for the Takao Tozan Dentetsu cable car. Take the cable car to Takao-san Station (a five-minute ride), and then walk about 40 minutes to the Takao Visitor Center.
    • From Keio Takao-yamaguchi Station: Walk five minutes to Kiyotaki Station for the Takao Tozan Dentetsu ski lift. Take the cable car to Takao-san Station (a five-minute ride), and then walk about 40 minutes to the Takao Visitor Center.
    • From Keio Takao-yamaguchi Station (alternative route): Walk five minutes to Sanroku Station for the Takao Tozan Dentetsu ski lift). Take the ski lift to Sanjo Station (a 12-minute ride), and then walk about 40 minutes to the Takao Visitor Center.

Facilities and Activities

The Takao Visitor Center is a facility located within the natural park for the purpose of providing information to visitors about the nature of the area. The visitor center is staffed by guides who, through exhibits, presentations, and a variety of programs, provide information about the nature and history of Mt. Takao and the relationship between people and nature. Please feel free to ask questions about the flowers and birds you can see on Mt. Takao, the Mt. Takao research trails, or anything else that piques your interest.

      Flying squirrels are the nighttime celebrities of Mt. Takao. This exhibit introduces the flying squirrels of Mt. Takao in detail. Why don't you become a flying squirrel expert, too?

  • First floor
    • Introduction to Mt. Takao
      This fun exhibit, which lets you play as you learn, introduces the history and nature of Mt. Takao. If you're wondering which path you should take to get back down the mountain on your way home, the information here can help you decide.
    • Introduction to the Tokyo national parks
      The visitor center also provides information about other Tokyo national parks and visitor centers outside the Mt. Takao area. After mastering Mt. Takao, step up to the next level! Let's visit the other natural parks, too!
    • Search system
      "What's that flower called?" If you have questions after your hike, you can search for the plants and animals of Mt. Takao based on details such as color, shape, and location.

Program Guidance

  • Slide shows
    Using photos of scenery and wildlife that they took on Mt. Takao, our guides explain the natural environment and history of Takao while interacting with visitors.
  • Guided walks
    Our guides take outdoor walks with visitors, explaining topics related to the current seasonal nature. You can enjoy seeing, touching, smelling, and experiencing nature as you walk.
  • Leisure talks
    Using specimens and models, our guides explain the things you can see during the current season, as well as ways to enjoy nature.

Requests to Our Visitors

Although Mt. Takao is located only about one hour from the metropolitan center of Tokyo, much of the nature of the area still remains. Because of this, more than 2.5 million people visit Mt. Takao every year, mostly from the Tokyo area. We ask that our visitors do their part to protect the nature of Mt. Takao.

  • Please take any garbage back to your home or hotel to dispose of it.
  • Please take care that your actions do not impede the enjoyment of others.
  • Finally, please take care not to harm the flowers, plants, and animals.
