Features of Metropolitan Tama Hills Natural Park

A Natural Park that Preserves the Bountiful Ecosystem of the Tama Hills

Established in the hills of the south shores of the Tama River, the area of the Tama Hills Natural Park is mentioned in the 7th century verse, “Over the hill range of Tama”, from the Manyoshu, the oldest surviving collection of Japanese poetry.
The north side of the park touches the plains along the Tama River. This affords an unbroken view of the mountains of Takao, Okutama, and Chichibu.

Metropolitan Tama Hills Natural Park is centered around the Tama Hills. The park covers 19.52 square kilometers (4,823 acres) spanning three cities in western Tokyo: Hachioji, Hino, and Tama. The north side of the park faces the flatland along the Tama River, and offers a great natural landscape with expansive views of Takao, Okutama, and the mountains of Chichibu. The park consists of many famous spots, such as the Takahata Fudo Temple and Hirayama-joshi Park (the park around the ruins of Hirayama Castle). It is also home to the Yaen Pass, the Keio Mogusaen garden, and the Tama Zoological Park, making the area popular for casual recreation among residents of Tokyo.
