Features of Metropolitan Takiyama Natural Park

Takiyama Prefectural Natural Park encompasses a large portion of the Takiyama Hills, (elevation 200 m (about 655 ft.)), which stretch to the south of where the Tama River and Akikawa River meet. Where the north end of the park touches the Tama River sheer cliffs stand several tens of meters high. The view of the Tama River and the Akikawa River from the cliffs, and from the mountain ridge that runs through the park, is amazing and affords an unbroken view of the Kanto Plain.

Located in the southwest part of Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, the Okutama area is surrounded by nature. The area contains a chain of mountains with Mt. Kumotori (elevation: 2017 meters/6,617 feet) as its main peak, as well as dense forests that are home to large mammals such as the Asiatic black bear and the Japanese serow, which is classed as a special natural treasure. The area is also inhabited by some 1,600 species of plant life. The beauty of the river valley and of Lake Okutama, centered around the Tamagawa River and the Nippara River, changes with each season. This charming town, surrounded by rich forests, lakes, and rivers, is a place where visitors can fully enjoy mountain climbing, hiking, camping, fishing, and other outdoor activities, and is a beloved destination for many people all year round.
