January - Dondo-yaki

Dondo-yaki is a traditional fire festival for the New Year’s season, and is held on January 15 at Yuyake Koyake Fureai Village. A deity called Toshigami-sama who descends from the sky on New Year’s Day is said to return to the sky with the smoke of Dondo-yaki. The festival is held to see the deity off. People bring New Year’s decorations made of bamboo and ropes from their homes to welcome Toshigami-sama. They pile them up in one place and burn them while roasting dumplings in the fire to pray for good health for the year. March - Takao Baigo Plum Blossom Festival

Takao Baigo is a collective name for six plum forests, including the Yuhodo plum forest. The origin of the plum forests is due to the establishment of the Takao Baigo Association, which turned the plum forests along the former Koshu Kaido road into a tourist destination, and then households planted more plum trees in their gardens and fields. From the east, the forests are the Yuhodo plum forest, Sekisho plum forest, Tenjin plum forest, Arai plum forest, Yunohana plum forest, Kogesawa plum forest, and Kobotoke plum forest. This area is selected as one of the best views of nature and parks, among the 88 Views of Hachioji. About 10,000 plum trees bloom from late February to late March. The Takao Baigo Plum Blossom Festival is held during this season. Street stalls open in the plum forests during the festival. Various events are also held, such as koto recitals and open-air tea ceremonies.

October - Hojo Ujiteru Festival

Hojo Ujiteru, the founder of Hachioji Castle, was born as the third son of Hojo Ujiyasu (some say he was the second son) who later became the third lord of the Hojo, the warlord governing Odawara. As a child, Ujiteru was adopted by the Oishi family who governed the Tama, Iruma, and Koma areas, and he moved to Takiyama Castle. He expanded the power of the Hojo by turning the Oishi territories into Hojo territories. The Association of Former Autonomous Town Councils in the Hachioji Area organizes the Hojo Ujiteru Festival to show respect for Hojo Ujiteru, who had strong ties with Hachioji Castle, and to inform many people about Hachioji. The festival includes a parade of more than 100 people in samurai armor, a very real sword dance, and a war departure ceremony on Takao Kaido, and at Moto-Hachioji Elementary and Junior High Schools.
