Features of Meiji no Mori Takao Quasi-national Park
This quasi-national park stretches from the foot of the mountains on the outskirts of Hachioji City, with Mt. Takao at its center.
As part of the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration, portions of the Metropolitan Takao-Jimba Natural Park and Mino Park, in Osaka Prefecture, were designated as quasi-national parks. Many Tokyo residents use this park as a nearby place to enjoy nature.
This is a 770-hectare (1,902-acre) quasi-national park centered around Mt. Takao. Located in the western part of Tokyo, Mt. Takao has an altitude of 599 meters (1,965 feet). Mt. Takao has long been under protection, and thus its lush nature has been preserved despite its close proximity to Tokyo. Forests around Mt. Takao are located along the border between the cool temperate zone and the warm temperate zone, meaning that the environment provides habitats for organisms suited for both climate zones. Many species therefore inhabit this area.
