Features of Mukojima Island

Mukojima Islands from the sea (Mukojima Island)

After leaving Takeshiba Port at 11:00 a.m. on the Ogasawara-maru, you can see a series of islands in the order of Kitanoshima, Mukojima, Nakodojima, and Yomejima Islands around 9:00 a.m. on the next day. Mukojima Island is inhabited by many sea birds. You can see brown boobies from the Ogasawara-maru. A 1 km long rocky area is located 1.5 km from the south of Mukojima Island, a scatter of long sharp peculiar rocks formed through erosion, such as the needle-like Harinoiwa. There are also many diving spots called shark cave or tuna cave in the sea around these islands.

Accessing Mukojima

Mukojima Island (commonly known as Keta Island) is located in the northernmost part of the Ogasawara Islands about 70 km north of Chichijima Island. Livestock farmers used to live on this island before the war. Since this island currently has no residents, no regular transportation service is available to this island. The island can be seen only when the Ogasawara-maru passes nearby. You can visit this island and walk around some parts of the island by charter boat or by joining a tour. This walking route requires a tour guide with permission.
