Team Mottainai

For the development　of　Tokyo　to　be　an　environmentally　sustainable　city,　it　is　important　to　encourage citizens to change their individual behaviors considering that individual activities may result consequently in the significant influence on the total environment.

In August 2018, TMG created a Team Mottainai in partnership with businesses, NGOs and other organizations.

The Japanese word “mottainai” has the sense that something is too precious to waste and also expresses respect for the Earth’s resources.

This Team aims, through the activities in the following three areas, at raising awareness of individual consumers of the sense of “MOTTAINAI” so to change their consumption behaviors.

• Promotion of “eat-all manner” in company cafeterias. Also, promotion of “3010 Exercise” * in special dinner parties.

*This is to encourage people to enjoy foods/dishes for 30 minutes, not leaving own seats, after Toast, and also in 10 minutes before the party closing time, returning to own seats, to enjoy dishes again. This aims at reducing food wastes.

• Promotion of utilizing reusable table wares and reuse-cups at the time of holding events and similar parties.

• To recommend company staff and their family members to use “my-bag” and “my-hashi (chopsticks)”.

• Promotion of initiative uses of energy-saving home electric appliances and eco-materials

** The abovementioned initiatives are just only imaged ones, and the initiatives are not limited to the above.

Participants in the team MOTTAINAI activities may publicize their activities using the Logo of the Team MOTTAINAI.

It expresses an image showing that “MOTTAINAI” concept arises and firmly takes roots.
If the team MOTTAINAI activities expand to the people concerned and raise awareness of the sense of “MOTTAINAI” in each person so to enable them to improve their choice of environment-friendly actions in their daily lives, the realization of a sustainable society will come within our views.

It may be used in the following cases, for example. Please note that it is not limited to these example cases:

• To put the Logo on posters or flyers for campaign activities of reducing food wastes and energy saving;
• To put the Logo on banner flags or signboards for the promotion of saving of plastic shopping bags at supermarkets or similar shops;
• To put the Logo on homepages of companies or to post it on SNS or direct mails.

If the purpose or method of the use of the Logo falls under any of the following cases, the Logo must not be used.

• The purpose or use is or is feared to be contrary to the laws or public order and standards of decency.
• The purpose or use is deemed to injure the credibility or decency of Tokyo.
• The purpose or use is deemed to support or recommend a specific individual, organization, corporation (excluding the Tokyo Government) or specific products, or is suspected of supporting any of the above.
• The Logo is used as the name of a specific product or brand.
• The Logo is used in a manner that gives rise to a misunderstanding that the Tokyo Government guarantees the quality of a product or technology of the Participating Organizations, etc.
• The use is deemed to express a specific political, religious, or ideological assertion and so on.

The Team is opened for participation by anybody including individuals, enterprises, municipalities, research institutes or NGOs, whoever agrees on the team MOTTAINAI initiatives and agrees on “Team MOTTAINAI Establishment Rules（PDF：144KB）.”
The major requirements for participating include the followings:

• To introduce the MOTTAINAI concept to general consumers in various opportunities in wide ranges and to conduct activities for “Saving Food, Materials, Energy” that may open a line of changing consumption behaviors ;

• To carry out such activities in Tokyo Area, and others

Before the application, please be sure to read “Team MOTTAINAI Establishment Rules（PDF：144KB）” and the “Team MOTTAINAI Logo Use Rules（PDF：183KB）” .

To review and confirm the rules relevant to the Team (Team MOTTAINAI Establishment Rules) put on the homepage;
To input required information onto the Application Form: and
To receive a notice of the completion of the registration.

*A notice of the completion of the registration will be sent to you usually within 1~2 weeks after the application. In any late case, the communication will be made within one month after the application.
